Luxembourg Airport today reported that it experienced a record summer, with almost 300,000 passengers in the month of August 2015 alone.

In July this summer, a traffic peak was already registered, with figures showing 272,000 passengers surmounting the previous record of 269,000 in August 2014. However, July was outshone by its August successor, which experienced 295,000 passengers in total.

The Airport, which provides direct flight service to 66 destinations, revealed that traffic was up 11.3% last July and over 9% in August as compared with the same month in the previous year. The increase in the number of passengers since the beginning of the year was found to have exceeded 7%.

The Luxair Group was cited as a main contributor to the 30,000 additional passengers who passed through the Airport in the two months, whilst other airlines were reported to have drastically improved their performance, with an increa of 24% for Turkish Airlines, 19% for TAP Portugal, 16% for British Airways, and 14% for Easyjet.

Commercial passenger aircraft movements were found to have risen by only 2.1% since the beginning of the year.

Looking forward to the upcoming autumn-winter season, Luxembourg Airport spoke of changes that will occur in the dynamic and structure of the airlines established at the airport. Lufthansa will add two daily flights to its current twice-daily service to Munich whilst Luxair will aid a 4th daily flight on this route, serving the route 8 times per day rather than the current 5.

Easyjet have also increased certain weekly flights, namely within the offer of between 4 and 5 weekly flights to Porto rather than 3 this summer, whilst Copenhagen flights currently operated by Luxair and SAS will be run entirely by Luxair and will subsequently increase the number of seats available on this and the Stockholm route. In addition, a new route to Lyon, operated by Chalair, will open on 28 September 2015 and will travel every weekday.

The Airport itself will undergo changes, with the new shopping and catering outlets provided by Lagardère Services, SSP and Valora Luxembourg expected to start to run points of sale from 1 November 2015. The refurbishment and reopening of the services will be planned in several phases running up until spring 2016.

According to the Airport, the new parking concept introduced in 2015 and the extension of available parking facilities has results in a better traffic flow, with hundreds of places persistently available in the previously-saturated Car Parks A and B. External car parks such as Car Park E near the terminal and Car Park M 'Economy', accessible by shuttle, have also experienced a surge in users owed particularly to the growth in French and German clientele.

As previously reported by The Chronicle, lux-Airport also announced plans to extend drop-off areas in order to improve the conditions of access and comfort for the different kerb users such as passengers, taxis and public transport.
