In her first tournament of 2016, Luxembourg's Mandy Minella lost in the first qualifying round of the Women's Singles Championship at the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, to Austria's 25 year-old Tamira Paszek (ranked #172) 3-6, 3-6.

Torrential rain meant that the first round of qualifying was played indoors, with no ticket access for spectators; this meant that the Minella - Paszek match (like many others) could be watched only by their respective coaches and some tournament officials.

Paszek went on to qulaify for the main tournament proper, eventually reaching the semi-finals where she lost to Germany's Julia Goerges. In the final, Sloane Stephens (USA, ranked #30) defeated Julia Goerges (Germany, ranked #50), 7-5, 6-2, to lift the title.

In the Women's Doubles Championship she was partnered with Petra Martic (24, Croatia, #148). In the first round they were defeated in three sets by Elise Mertens and An-Sophie Mestach, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.

The 31 year-old from Esch-sur-Alzette is currently ranked #168 in the world.
