Following in the footsteps of Rome, South Africa and Argentina, this March will mark the turn of Burma to be represented in audiovisual form at the Centre des Arts Pluriels Ettelbruck (CAPE).
As part of CAPE's World Exploration documentary series, directors Linda Paquette and Martin Parent will highlight Burma, enabling audiences to explore this country which was the site of the Saffron Revolution, Cyclone Nargis and the liberation of Aung San Suu Kyi. At the dawn of a political transition marking the end of fifty years of military rule, Burma is experiencing growing interest, with diplomats, investors and travellers all knocking at its door.
Linda Paquette and Martin Parent first delved into Burmese culture in 2004, with their documented journey beginning on the banks of the Irrawaddy river in the archaelogically grandiose city of Bagan. The great river will then lead spectators to Yango, the country's metropolis and a must for understanding the Burma of the past and present. Moving away from urban life, audiences will be able to discover the mountains of Shan State and the famous Inle Lake, a fragile ecosystem under threat. Buddhism will be an ever-present feature throughout the adventure, in the form of the discovery of the Golden Rock and Shwedagon Pagoda.
With backgrounds in science, Linda Paquette and Martin Parent taught themselves the art of film-making, with the Northern Quebecois duo picking up the camera during a two-year trip around the world. Upon returning from their travels, the pair presented their adventures through the form of conferences throughout their home province, highlighting the nomadic traditions of Mongolia, the fragility of the Tibetan culture and the Amerindian people of Patagonia, among others. They have striven to focus on the cultural and social realities of populations in the least well-known corners of the planet and have so far visited over 40 countries. 'Burma, a Treasure Unveiled' ('Birmanie, un trésor dévoilé') represents the team's first documentary film, a portrait of a richly complex and every mysterious country.
The screening will take place at 20:00 on Tuesday 8 Macrh 2016 at CAPE, 1 place Marie Adélaïde, Ettelbrück. The film will be screened in French. Tickst cost 16€ at standard rate, 8€ for under-26s, and 1.50€ with a Kulturpass. To reserve, contact 2681 2681 or visit www.cape.lu.
