Directed by Alex Proyas (I, Robot; The Crow; Dark City) and starring Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent; Oculus; Blue Lagoon: The Awakening), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Oblivion; The Other Woman; Wimbledon) and Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen; Coriolanus; Nim's Island; The Phantom of the Opera; Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life; P.S. I Love You).
Adventure drama, 127 mins, 12+, in English
An action-packed tale that appears to be an amalgamation of The Mummy, Transformers and parts of Indiana Jones and the the Temple of Doom. While the storyline is fairly straight-forward - Set (Gerard Butler), the god of darkness, kills his brother Osiris to take over the throne of Egypt and banishes his nephew Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who seeks revenge with the help of a mortal, Bek (Brenton Thwaites) - the cinematography and special effects are stunning, both close-up and distance shots and, in particular, the panoramic shots.
Instead of a happy, content and peaceful kingdom under Osiris, Set has turned all mortals into slaves and he has threatened all the other gods for their obedience. Bek's love has been taken away from him and he seeks out to help Horus who may be the only one to triumph over Set's evil.
Such films provide escapism for cinamagoers and it is easy to see why. The fight, chase and destruction scenes are breath-taking but there is no let-up in the non-stop action. With everyone speaking English and with a whole spectrum of different accents, the Hollywood stamp shone through. For those who know their Egyptian Gods, it may be interesting to spot them in the line-up.
