Based on the novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Sunset Song is set in Scotland in the early 20th century and tells the story of young Chris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn) as she grows up in rural Scotland, near Aberdeen. She is very literate and reads to the family by candlelight in the evenings. They live off the land and her father rules the family with an iron fist and takes his belt to Chris' elder brother. She also has two younger brothers. Her mother, well into her 40s, tries to spurn the sexual advances of her husband but in vain. When she has twins it gets too much for her. In a short space of time Chris loses her mother, father and brothers, all in different ways. She dreams of being a schoolteacher and has to grow up fast, getting married.......

A beautiful tale by a director who is obviously incredibly passionate about his work, based on the post-screening Q&A at the Luxembourg City Film Festival. With excellent cinematography, the storytelling moves at a constant pace that is neither too fast nor too slow, quite soulful without being nostalgic, with the voice-over narration and dialogue using language of the time which was, at times, quite difficult to understand, particularly the lyrics of some of the songs around the wedding. With Luxembourg's Gast Waltzing also involved in the film's score, the soundtrack is, quite simply, stunning.

The simple rural life and the land are portrayed in both glorious sunshine as well as in pouring rain, with a storm scene the settign for one of the pivotal moments in the film. It deals with the onset of WWI and how people and communities are split between serving their country and looking after their families.

The no-man's land, all the interiors and Pétange train station were all shot in Luxembourg, with the cornfields in bright sunshine shot in New Zealand, with the remainder in Scotland. The film has secured worldwide distribution and will go on general release in Luxembourg on 9 March.
