A Luxembourg co-production with SAMSA Films, with Bernard Michaux as co-producer; it was almost entirely shot in Luxembourg.
Directed by Antoine Cuypers (some short films) and starring Nathalie Baye (Le petit lieutenant; Les hommes de l'ombre; Catch Me If You Can; Tomorrow's Another Day), Ariane Labed (The Lobster; Before Midnight; The Forbidden Room), Julien Baumgartner (The Tourist; You'll Get Over It; The Easy Way Out).
Drama; 105 mins; 6+
The film charts the relationships during a family meal at the parent's house, also involving the children, two brothers and a sister (all adults), two of whom are married (one with a child) and the other, Laurent (Julien Baumgartner) who has social difficulties and needs to be cared for - possibly he has a form of autism.
The day is fine so they decide to eat in the garden. Laurent's sister Caroline (Ariane Labed) reveals she is pregnant to the delight of everyone, particularly her mother (Nathalie Baye), but Laurent is confused and upsets the equilibrium. His reaction and antics create unease, with his mother and father each trying to keep the peace at different times. His resentment turns first into anger and then fury while he tries to get across to everyone else that he is the subject of prejudice.
Laurent has been tranfixed by a wall-to-wall poster in his room which his mother told him is of Austria. He is determined to go there, possibly with his father - an idea which his mother is dead against - and has studied its geography and history. His fixation boils over and the family has to resort to dramatic recource. But life for everyone else must go on...
Préjudice has been awarded the Public Prize at the Festival Premiers Plans d'Angers.
Following its avant-premier last Thursday, Préjudice will be released in both Luxembourg and France on Wednesday 3 February.
