Diredcted by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech; Les Misérables; The Damned United) and starring Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything; Les Misérables; My Week with Marilyn; The Other Boleyn Girl) and Alicia Vikander (Testament of Youth, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., A Royal Affair, Anna Karenina, The Fifth Estate).
Drama; 119 mins, 16+
Starting off in Copehagen in 1926, the film tells the story of a Danish couple, Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and their struggle when Einar becomes Lili Elbe in a fine and delicate portrayl as a transgender pioneer.
Both are painters and together are trying for a family, but without results. Initially his artwork appears to be more successful, but when Gerda asks Einar to fill in for a model and pose wearing women's stockings and high heels, the start of the transformation is evident. Einar loathes attending receptions and back-slapping events, but gains the courage to go as Lili. Like Einar, but in a different way, Gerda is confused, but her love for Einar ensures she stays by his side through his difficult journey which takes them to Paris when her art (portraits of Lili) are selected for an exhibition.
Geographically their journey also takes them to Germany where a doctors understands Einer and his predicament and offers to help by preparing him for transgender surgery.
A very touching, thought-provoking and poignant drama which deals with a delicate subject, Einar's sexual liberation to become Lili, very delicately without burrowing too much into the workings of the mind, either on the screen or in the audience's.
Nominated for 4 Oscars. While Eddie Redmayne won last year (Best Actor in The Theory of Everything), his is in with a shout this year too, but Alicia Vikander arguably has a stronger chance for hir first.
