Luxembourg's Secretary of State for Sustainable Development, Camille Gira, is to meet with Jan Jambon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Security and the Interior of Belgium, on 18 January to discuss issues related to safety of the nuclear reactors at the Tihange power station which is located outside Huy, located between Liege and Namur, around 90km from the north-west corner of the Grand Duchy.
The Secretary of State will be accompanied by representatives of the Ministry of Health and representatives of non-governmental organisations, members of the "National Nuclear Action Committee" of Luxembourg.
The Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has, from the highest level, repeatedly expressed its concerns about deficiencies in the nuclear plant of Tihange. Furthermore, the Environment Minister, Carole Dieschbourg, has appointed a legal expert with expertise on the legal arsenal available to the Luxembourg Government concerning authorisations of the Belgian and French nuclear regimes.
The previous informal meeting about the Tihange plant took place on 10 November 2015, at the request of Luxembourg, between the Secretary of State, Camille Gira, and the Federal Minister of Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, Marie-Christine Marghem. The official meeting with Minister Jan Jambon, requested by Luxembourg, was scheduled for late 2015, but was postponed by the Belgian side.
The three reactors at Tihange were put into service in the 1970s and 1980s. Their activity was extended until 2023 - 2025.
