The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has partnered with the University of Cypruse to present a workshop on the treatment of wastewater for 29 and 30 October 2015.
Issus remain in this domain, as current water treatment technologies applied to wastewater are unable to completely eliminate micropollutants, antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) or even their genes. This problem becomes even more significant in countries where water is scarce, as it is very difficult to reuse wastewater and the case is no different for Luxembourg, where the elimination of micro-pollutants and ARB are important issues in improving the quality of surface water. The development of more efficent but complex treatments risks directly impacting the price of water, whilst questions related to import and export in Europe of products irrigated with wastewater need to be considered.
To this end, no fewer than 70 representatives of NEREUS COST (ES1403) from 29 EU countries, as well as Ukraine, Tunisia, Australia and Hong Kong, will gather in Luxembourg on LIST's premises to discuss such issues.
NEREUS COST represents the largest European multidisciplinary network, comprised of more than 200 members. COST Actions (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) provide a flexible and efficient platform for scientists to cooperate on funded research activities at the national level. Scientists collaborate in order to develop, through various working groups, measures and technologies to address critical issues regarding the reuse of wastewater.
Luxembourg is represented by Dr. Alex Cornelissen and Dr. Philippe Delfosse of LIST.
