As the return of the wolf spreads around Europe, the Luxembourgish Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure has organised a series of conferences during the month of October to educate the population of the Grand Duchy on this mysterious animal.
Wolves have been making a comeback in Europe for the past 25 years, with a pack and its offspring having been spotted in the Vosges since 2013, a lone wolf reported near the Lac de Madine; and evidence found of a wolf presence in Saarland, pending a final confirmtion from DNA analysis.
As wolves may often travel hundreds of kilometres in search of a new habitat, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Luxembourg, with its densely-packed forest regions, could itself experience the return of the wolf.
With this in mind, the Nature Agency of the Grand Duchy has taken the first few steps towards establishing a wolf management plan following a March nationwide meeting, attended by experts from France, Belgium and Germany, where the most substantive aspects were ascertained.
One crucial aspect of dealing with the wolf at various levels was cited as educating people in all matters regarding the wolf. In order to achieve this, the Ministry has collaborated with more than 20 partner organisations and administrations to organise five public conferences, at which biologist and Deputy Director of the Nature Management, Dr. Laurent Schley, will outline the phenomenal spread of the wolf in Europe and intriguing biological and ecological aspects of this species.
The conference are free entrance, and will be conducted in Luxembourgish. They will be followed by a discussion and will take place on the following days:
