The charity concert for the benefit of the Luxembourg Red Cross, organised in collaboration with Deloitte Luxembourg, will be held on Friday 26 February 2016 at 20:00 at the Philharmonie in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.
For this traditional musical event that helps support many humanitarian projects, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra will play under the direction of young British conductor Jamie Phillips.
Proceeds from the evening will go towards refugee assistance in Luxembourg and abroad and to families in a precarious situation in Luxembourg.
The programme of the concert is a tribute to dance with a jazz suite, virtuoso gypsy melodies and excerpts from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet. The programme will include the following pieces:
- Dmitri Chostakovitch: Suite pour orchestre de jazz N° 1
- Maurice Ravel: Tzigane. Rapsodie de concert
- Pablo de Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen (Airs tsiganes)
- Sergueï Prokofiev: Roméo et Juliette. Suites N° 1–3 (extraits / Auszüge)
For the very rhythmic Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 1 by Shostakovich, the OPL will play with many brass instruments (saxophones, trumpets, trombone) and percussion, to which will be added a banjo, a ukulele, violin and bass.
A rising star of contemporary violin, the young soloist Alena Baeva, will take up the challenge of interpreting Tzigane. A concert rhapsody by Ravel and Gypsy Airs by Pablo de Sarasate, two highly virtuosic works.
In the second part, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra will play excerpts from the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev, inspired by the famous Shakespeare tragedy.
Tickets cost €70, €50, €25, (U27s €42, €30, €15). For further details and ticket purchases, see www.philharmonie.lu or tel: 2632-2632.
